Chelian Da Parivar
CHELIAN DA PARIVAR
S. Santa Singh was the only son of his parents and was born during 1892. He was having two sisters Mrs Inder Kaur & Mrs Sant Kaur. As per the customs of that time, he was not educated and started taking keen interest in farming from childhood. His father Mr. Kanshi Ram was a very saintly person, probably because of that only the nick name of the family became "Chelas" (ਚੇਲਸ). The other reason of nick naming Chelas can be the existence of some worshiping place in the house. I remember during 1950s there was a small engraved stone kept in the Kachi wall of the house which was being worshiped by all. Subsequently during late 1950s when the old Kacha house was demolished and the foundation for the new house was being dug, additional engraved stones were found. All these items are still kept at a separate place in the house and whole family worships it.
2. S. Santa Singh got married to Mrs. Dhan Kaur of V. Rajpalwan PO Mand Pandher Tehsil Dasuya Distt Hoshiarpur. They were blessed with ten sons named S. Dhirat Singh, S. Amar Singh, S. Kartar Singh ,S. Shankar Singh, S. Kesar Singh, S. Chanan Singh, S. Resham Singh, S. Pritam Singh, S. Harbans Singh and S. Shauquin Singh. Six of them were married and four brothers namely S. Shankar Singh, S. Amar Singh, S. Kesar Singh and S. Harbans Singh were not married. S. Kartar Singh and S. Chanan Singh were married to two sisters of V. Radhechak Tehsil Dasuya whereas S. Resham Singh and S. Pritam Singh were married to two sisters of VPO Jhinger Khurd Tehsil Dasuya. S. Dhirat Singh was married to Mrs. Charan Kaur of V. Bagalipur Tehsil Dasuya whereas S. Shauquin Singh youngest of all brothers was married to Mrs. Mohinder Kaur D/O S. Ratan Singh of V. Samastpur Distt Jullandar. Self and family details of all the brothers is given on subsequent pages.
3. Mrs Inder Kaur was married to S. Sher Singh of village Gajjan Gillan. She was blessed with a son S. Mehnga Singh who in turn has three sons.
4. Mrs Sant Kaur was married to S. Ishwar Singh of village Datta ( He was a very stylish man and was very fond of horses and dogs. He used to move in style on horseback with his gun on shoulder followed by his dogs. He migrated to Bar and from there after partition to village Gag Sultan Tehsil Dasuya Distt Hoshiarpur. He was blessed with four sons (S. Gurnam Singh, S. Dhanna Singh, S. Gurdev Singh and S. Daleep Singh). Family tree of Sant Kaur can be seen on the subsequent pages.
5. S. Santa Singh was the leading personality of his area. He developed a brotherly relationship with Zaildar S. Kartar Singh of V. Bodal. Till now the family is maintaining good relationship with Zaildar family. Being the most powerful person of the village, he did not encourage his sons to behave abnormal with anyone.
All the brothers had deep respect for each other and provided adequate help whenever required. Santa Singh breathed his last during 1959 and S. Shankar Singh took over the reins of the family.
Part Migration to Village Gas Sultan
6. During 1964 family purchased a big piece of land (35 acres) at V. Gag Sultan PO Ghogra Tehsil Dasuya. S. Kartar Singh, S. Chanan Singh and S. Harbans Singh stayed back at V. Mand and rest of the family moved to V. Gag Sultan.
7. Land holdings
(a) Mand & Teli Chak
Total land holdings with the family was 319 Kanals and 11 Marias. The details of this original holding is as follows :-
V. Mand : 289 Kanals 12 Marlas
V. Teli Chak : 029 Kanals 19 Marlas
Total : 319 Kanals 11 Marlas
(b) Gag Sultan
(i) Out of the 35 acres of land purchased during 1964, approximately 13 acres of land was taken over by the Govt. to build up an Ammunition Depot near the village after the 1971 Pakistan War. Compensation of this land was given at the rate of Rs. 3000/- per acre which was distributed amongst the brothers. Family was left with 168 Kanals and 4 Marias at Village Gag Sultan.
(ii) Additional land was purchased by S. Dhirat Singh and S. Resham Singh subsequently.
(c) Mand. Teli Chak & Gag Sultan
Thus total holding of land was as follows :-
Village Mand : 289 Kanals 12 Marlas
Village Teli Chak : 029 Kanals 19 Marlas
Village Gag Sultan : 168 Kanals 04 Marlas
Total : 487 Kanals 15 Marlas
Trees
8. Family had around 200 big trees. Majority of these trees were Mango trees. These mango grooves were at six different places. Now family of S. kartar Singh & S. Chanan Singh has mangoes trees, rest all are cut.
Distribution of Land & Trees
9. S. Shankar Singh expired during 1973 after a massive heart attack. His share was distributed amongst the remaining nine brothers. Now the family was left with six married and three unmarried brothers. With the mutual consent each unmarried brother joined the other two married brothers, thus three groups emerged. Their details are as follows:-
Group I: S. Amar Singh (unmarried) joined S. Dhirat Singh and S. Shauquin Singh. S. Amar Singh expired during 1990. Some rift came up for distribution of S. Amar Singh property after his death amongst the descendents of S. Dhirat Singh and S. Shauquin Singh. Matter went upto the court but it was unanimously decided by all the brothers to give two third to S. Dhirat Singh's descendents and one third to S. Shauquin Singh's descendents.
Group II : S. Harbans Singh (Unmarried) joined S. Kartar Singh and S. Chanan Singh. Share of S. Harbans Singh will go to these two brothers. S. Harbans Singh expired on 13 Jan 2010 & his land was equally distributed to two brothers S. Kartar Singh & S. Chanan Singh.
Group III : S. Kesar Singh (unmarried) joined S. Resham Singh and S. Pritam Singh. S. Kesar Singh distrubuted his share equal to all five descendents of two brothers i.e. S. Satpal Singh, S. Jasbir Singh, S. Baldev Singh, S. Jaswant Singh and S. Kulwant Singh. It is worth mentioning that during 1990 itself S. Kesar Singh himself forced to get the registry done in the Tehsil to avoid subsequent rifts. Even father does not give his share to his children till the time he is alive. S. Kesar Singh survived till 20 Mar 2008.
10. The second problem came up that land at V. Gag Sultan was more fertile than land at V. Mand. The following was decided unanimously by all the brothers :-
(a) S. Kartar Singh, S. Chanan Singh and S. Harbans Singh who preferred to stay at V. Mand will not get any land at V. Gag Sultan.
(b) These brothers will be given extra 12 Kanals of land of their choice at V. Mand in addition to their share as compensation to good land at V. Gag Sultan.
(c) The land where the mango grooves were there, was not much fertile. It was unanimously decided that whichever mango groove any group is picking up, same land also that group has to take over as their share.
11. Looking into all the constraints stated above, the distribution of land was carried out during 1993 and following shares emerged:-

13. From the village Mashtarka land, family was allotted 9 Kanal 16 Marlas at vill Gag Sultan during 1999. This land is divided on the same basis as mentioned in para 9 above. S. Hardial Singh S/O S. Shauquin Singh was not given any share of land in the lal lakeer of both the villages Gag Sultan and Mand, hence he is given priority and is given his share of land closer to the outer periphery of village on the side of Samaadan. Unfortunately he sold of this land also and his share in Agriculture/ Residential area in both villages became NIL. Rest of the family has their share of land on both the sides of the village drainage. S. Jaspal Singh and partners created some problem in giving land to S. Hardial Singh, hence they were given five Marlas extra to sort out the problem. Out of this land, share of S. Satpal Singh/S. Jasbir Singh is on the drainage culvert on main road (Dasuya Hazipur). It is approximately 19 Marlas. This land is not included for anyone in the land distribution chart shown above in para 12.

S. SHANKAR SINGH MAND
S. Shankar Singh was the fourth child of his parents. He was born during 1917. He studied up to Matric and joined Army. After five years of service he quitted from the Army. At village, he was instrumental in inspiring his brothers to work hard. He took keen interest in family affairs and took over the reins of the big family after death of his father S. Santa Singh. He took over the whole responsibility and assured his brothers not to worry for anything in life except to work hard. It is worth mentioning that while he got the control of the whole family, there were more than thirty members in the family and he himself was not even married. To arrange the finances and to create the impression in everybody's mind that no injustice will be done, was a herculine's task but he did it up to the satisfaction of every one. It was to the extent that father (other brothers) was not even knowing that his daughter's marriage is being fixed. This was the blind faith and impression he created amongst his brothers.
2. He took part in the local politics also. He himself was the village Sarpanch. S. Satpal Singh Randhawa M L A was his personal friend. Apart from politics he took keen interest in social works also. He was founder for bringing up Teli Chak High School as till 1954 there was no School near the village. He was the chairman of the school till 1971 till school became a Govt. School. He was also a member of Khalsa School Dasuya Management Committee. He remained as Director Co-operative society Dasuya for a long time.
3. During 1973, he got a sudden massive heart attack and breathed his last. His loss is even felt now, even after 38 years of his death. This Mand Parivar has not come back to the status in which it was during 1973 while he was alive. We all wish his soul comforts in heaven.
4. His share of property was equally distributed amongst remaining nine brothers.
S. AMAR SINGH MAND
S. Amar Singh was the third child of his parents. He was born during 1915. He studied up to fifth class. During his childhood he was fond of body building. He even joined wrestling. During his young days he took keen interest in farming. He was very fond of good oxen and had a very good pair. Subsequently he stopped taking interest in farming and became a contractor for wood and charcoal. He used to buy trees, cut them and convert them to wood and charcoal. He used to take these items to Amritsar for sale through Aartias ( ). He earned a good profit.
2. He was not married. He was very fond of comforts and wanted to live in style. He purchased a good horse and made a special "Khurli" (ਖੁਰਲੀ) for it Every one used to enjoy the ride of this horse during our childhood. Those are the memorable days. Those days there were no roads, even cycles were not that common and high Govt. officials used to prefer on horseback. There was no horse owner in a radius of 05 KM from our village. So many times the services of our horse were called for by these high officials and even by the good Hindu friends staying in Dasuya Township for marriages. We lost this horse during 1973. Amongst all the brothers and relatives S. Amar Singh was known as "Ghorhi Wala"( ਘੋਰ੍ਹੀ ਵਾਲਾ) .
3. He gave his share of property to S. Dhirat Singh and S. Shauquin Singh. He breathed his last during 1990. May God bless his soul.
S. CHANAN SINGH MAND
S. Chanan Singh was the fifth child of his parents. He was born during 1919. He was not educated. He was 5' 7" tall, fair and cheerful in nature. During his young days he was very fond of body building and had extremely good health. He did farming with devotion. He was a man with a very cool temperament and deep thinking. It is worth mentioning that during land distribution amongst the brothers, the writer was the negotiator amongst all the brothers and it took only one hour for distribution of land at village Mand under the able guidance of S. Chanan Singh. The proposal put forward by him was acceptable to all without any objections. It was unimaginable to sort out such a big problem in this short time in which there were seventeen partners. God bless his soul.
2. While he was young, mother was badly in need of female working hands in the kitchen and there was none. He extended his help to the mother which is even remembered now. To look after the milk, was his responsibility, whether to milk the buffaloes or preparing the curd or churning the curd. He developed a special art of saving butter from the eyes of elder and younger brothers.
3. His land holding after land distribution amongst brothers and sale/ purchase is as follows:-
V. Gag Sultan : Nil
V. Mand : 56 K 04 M
: 14 K 02 M (Purchased from Hardial Singh)
: 28 K 03 M (Share from S. Harbans Singh)
Total : 98 K 09 M
4. He got married to Mrs Parkash Kaur of V. Radhe Chak . They were blessed with two sons and three daughters. The family details are given at subsequent pages. Here I will give the details of only one son S. Iqbal Singh (Eldest son) and his family.
5. S. Iqbal Singh:- He was born during 1949. Like his father, body building was his main hobby. The stone which he used to lift during his young days, is still lying as a challenge to the younger generation of today. He was 6 feet tall with an extremely good built. After matriculation he got selected as a teacher in Teli Chak School.
6. He got married to Mrs Sarbjit Kaur daughter of S. Sarwan Singh of V. Kala Bakra. They were blessed with two daughters and one son. Whole village in general and Chelian Da Parivar in particular is extremely proud of Ms. Mandip Kaur and Ms. Inderjit Kaur both daughters of Iqbal Singh who have not only brought laurels to the village but also to the District, State and Nation. The achievements of these girls are given on pages______ para _____. The destiny has played its own role & one day early morning I got a telephone call that S. Iqbal Singh Mand, pride of the village in all aspects is no more. He breathed his last on 01 Jun 2007 due to a sudden heart attack. God bless his soul & give courage to his family to bear the loss. The sad story does not end here. His son Harbinder Singh was given a Govt. job in a school, unfortunately he too got a heart attack at the age of 36 years and breathed his last on 08 Jun 2010. Now wife of Harbinder Singh is employed in a Govt. school as a compensation to the death of S. Harbinder Singh. Harbinder has one daughter & as on today there is no male member in the family of S. Iqbal Singh Mand.

S. KESAR SINGH MAND
S. Kesar Singh was the fifth child of his parents. He was born during 1919. He studied up to fifth class. From his childhood, he was fond of wrestling. He was horses/dogs lover during his young days. He was not much interested in farming. He used to go walking, for wrestling practice early morning at a distance of 3 miles. He was very fond of Moongli Pherna. His Moonglies were the heaviest and no one could use them for exercise.
2. He was 5'6" in height & had a very stout body. Because of wrestling he cut his hair & was clean shaven. During partition in 1947 he was in his full youth & was active participant in village offensive and defensive operations. It is said that he used to put a thin metai sheet around his body under his clothes during offensive operations. He even used to smoke. His drinking habit was very controlled i.e only one or two pegs.
3. He joined PAP as a Sepoy. Because of love for horses he switched over to B S F as a mounted constable. During his holidays, he frequently used to talk about his horse. From his salary he was spending money on his horse to keep it fit & healthier than other horses. He retired from service during late seventies.
4. After joining the service, he stopped smoking and started doing Paath Pooja. Even in spite of any sickness, he will take early morning bath, do his path & then he will start with daily activities. During his service, once "Khula path" was lagging much more than expected in his unit, he took the single handed responsibility and Bhog ceremony was performed in time. His officer incharge gave him lots of appreciation with a word of advice for keeping the hair. It touched his feelings and from then he was a changed person. He kept his beard and hair. Later on he became Amritdhari. After retirement he kept himself busy either in doing path or in social welfare activities.
5. He was not married but he was more worried about the welfare of each and every member of family. During service he helped the Parivar financially to his best capability. Even the writer is obliged since he used to get money from him during school/College days. He even presented-me a cycle while I was tenth class student during 1966. After retirement his main concern was the welfare of the family.
6. Because of his deep interest in religious activities he was selected as Secretary of Anandpur Sahib Khalsa Committee. Every year he used to take a big Jatha to Anandpur Sahib to celebrate Hola Mohalla. With the big collection of ration and money done around Dasuya, they used to organise a big Langar at Anandpur Sahib.
7. He was even elected as Director Co-Operative Society Dasuya. During 1984, he participated in Dharam Yudh.
8. V. Gag Sultan being originally a Muslim village was not having any Guruduara in the village and there was one Mosque in the village. After partition all Muslims left the village and this Mosque was lying unattended. It was at the verge of self destruction. It was with the individual initiative of S. Kesar Singh who motivated the village people, collected the donation from the village and brought up the village Guruduara during late Nineteen Seventies. Later with the help of S. Boota Singh, S. Ajit Singh and other families of village Gag Sultan, the village Guruduara is brought to the present excellent shape.
9. His concern for the welfare of the Cheiian Da Parivar was unmatched. It was he took the lead in making the groups as discussed earlier for distribution of land and offered to give his share to two of his brothers. He did not register his "will" to do so but forced everyone to get the "Registry" done in the Tehsil for his share so that after his death there are no disputes for his share of property. Who can do it? Even the father does not give his property to sons as S. Kesar Singh has done it. Generations will remember his good deeds. For the last eighteen years of his life, he was not having any property on his name.
10. He expired on 20 Mar 2008 after a brief sickness. Mand Parivar has made a room in his memory at Guruduara in V. Gag Sultan, the place of his residence. God bless his soul.

2. He got married to Mrs Bachan Kaur of V.P.O Jhinger Khurd Tehsil- Dasuya. They were blessed with three sons (S. Baldev Singh, S. Jaswant Singh and S. Kulwant Singh) and two daughters (Mrs Sewa Kaur and Mrs Kulwinder Kaur). Family details are given on subsequent pages. 3. He preferred to move to V Gag Sultan from V. Mand, Hoshiarpur during 1964 after the family purchased the land over there. Ownership of land was too big (35 Acres) and resources were very limited. Family did not have tractor till 1972. It was extremely difficult to handle this big farm without tractor but with his resources/ personal contacts he used to get eight to ten plough ( ) for tilling his land when required. It used to be a matter great of pride to see so many people working at a time in our fields. He worked hard to bring up the status of family. 4. He was ever ready to sacrifice himself for the honour and dignity of the family. Writer remembers the four different instances where he was tried and he met all the expectations. He enjoyed evening drinks. He expired on 14 Jul 2007 after a brief illness at the age of 82 years. May God bless his soul.
