THE MANDS
There are more than 2500 gotras of Jats. There was a strong wish to know where we “The Mands” stand amongst the 2500 Gotras of Jat community. There are various books written by English writers and other persons on Jat clans but the details of “Mand” clan is not given any where in details. Recently I was going through a book written by S. Hoshiar Singh Duleh, this book is titled as “Jattan Da Ithas” and carried the details of 101 Jat Gotras but “Mands’ are not included in these 101 Jat Gotras. So the eagerness to find out the details of “Mand” got further increased. In the meantime I could lay my hand on a book written by S. Mohinder Singh Mand titled as “We were Emperor, Once”. This book cover only Mand Clan of Jat Gotra, gives a detailed history of Mands right from 700 BC (Before Christ). This book covers the Mand History and family details of S. Mohinder Singh Mand. Again my wish was not full filled since I wanted to know which all the places Mands are and is there any relationship amongst them? With this thing in mind I started searching for Mands in Punjab, India. With the technological developments, lot of information regarding Mands & Mand villages could be found out from internet. To get the further details of these Mand & Mand villages, I wrote letters to all the sarpanches of these villages but I could get response from only two villages i.e. S. Makhan Singh Sarpanch of Village Mand Jharaundi, Machhiwara, Ludhiana and from S. Sukhchain Singh / S. Manjit Singh, Lambardar / Sarpanch of V. Sarhali Mandan, Tarn Taran respectively. In addition, Brigadier Gurnek Singh Mand of V. Hirdapur, Ropar contacted me to give the full support. I am extremely grateful to him. In the absence of full addresses/ details of these Mand villages, I decided to move out in search of these villages & contacting the concerned people personally. This was very time consuming and costly affair but there was no alternative. I am thankful to Brigadier Gurnek Singh & S. Gurdev Singh Gill (My cousin) who accompanied me to all villages.
I contacted S. Mohinder Singh Mand in England by sending him the E-Mails and talking to him on phone. He encouraged me by providing all the help required. I am extremely thankful to him.
During 1999-2000 while I was in service (IAF), I attempted to write a small book on Mands, but because of the time constraints I could not get full information & my project was limited to only my village Mand in Hoshiarpur Distt. That time I prepared & distributed 25 books to the various people of my village inside & outside India.
During the process of getting fresh information regarding Mands, I contacted S. Inderjit Singh Mand of my village in Canada, he felt extremely happy & told me that his younger daughter Preena has already fed most of the information in computer from my earlier book, my happiness knew no bounds. I asked him to send me the complete data by E-Mail, he did it & my efforts were saved to great extent to feed the complete info to computer once again. I am grateful to Preena for her devotion to Mand family. God bless her & I am proud of her. Not only that S. Inderjit Singh Mand has given me the financial help also. I am extremely thankful to S Prabhjot Singh Mand, IAS Labour Commissioner, Punjab to help me in getting the Khasra Bandobast of my village Mand to know the origin of my village. It is worth mentioning that Khasra Bandobast is written in Urdu, it was of no use till S. Malkiat Singh Pannu retired patwari of village Panwan helped to search the book from revenue department & translate it into Punjabi / English. Lots of thanks to S. Prabhjot Singh Mand, IAS & S. Malkiat Singh Pannu for the timely help.
Finally sincere thanks to my brother S. Jasbir Singh Mand resident in Canada for all the motivation and timely help for getting the information from the Mand relatives settled abroad.
This book is divided into two parts i.e Part One is the new information giving Mand history, Migration and Mands in Punjab where as Part Two is the revision and updation of my old book written on my village Mand during December, 2000.
The information contained in this booklet is obtained from S. Mohinder Singh Mand’s publication “We were Emperor, Once”; from the internet under the heading Mands & Mands (Clan) and from the various sites of internet. Idea is to put across the maximum information on Mands at one place, hence it is more or less compilation of information on Mands. This publication is not prepared for sale or any other financial benefits. I request everyone from where ever information is taken, to cooperate & further develop the subject for betterment of Mands.
I will be failing in my duty if I do not mention the name of Shri G C Borah a computer specialist who has helped me in compiling this information on computer as per our time plan, special thanks to him.
Any further information to develop the subject better is welcome
