Dasuya

DASUYA

 

 

Dasuya is a city and a municipality council in Hoshiarpur Distt. in the state of Punjab. This city name was derived from its historical events as it was destroyed & rebuilt “Ten times” hence the name “Da meaning Ten & Suya means Built”.

 

GEOGRAPHY

 

2.       Dasuya is located at 31.82o N 75.66o E. It has an average elevation of 240 mtrs (787 fts) from the sea level.

 

LOCATION

 

3.       Dasuya is situated on the National Highway 1A which connects J & K to rest of India. Dasuya is well connected with Rail and Road, Major Cities in the vicinity of Dasuya are Hoshiarpur (48 KM), Jalandhar (56 KM), Pathankot (56KM). State highways running through Dasuya connects Hoshiarpur, Talwara, Hazipur. Other connecting roads connect with Amritsar through Shri Hargobindpur, Daulatpur through Kamahi Devi & Kapurthala through Miani & Bijawal. The holy shrine of Mata Chintpurni can also be reached via Hazipur Talwara road. It is believed that Dasuya was surrounded by huge wall, which had various gates. Remains of gates are still available at 3 or 4 miles north of city.

 

ECONOMY

 

4.       Dasuya’s per capita income is higher than rest of Punjab which itself is one of the most prosperous states of India. Dasuya & its villages receive remittance from Western countries which is a major source of income. City is also a major supplier of bricks in Himachal & Punjab. A single Sugar Mill and Distillery in Randhawa village is largest sugarcane consumer in the North India. There are several small and medium agricultural based industries in the town. Unchi Bassi near Dasuya is a cantonment area that relies upon Dasuya for all essential supplies. Unchi Bassi is now known as Dasuya Cantt. Military exercises are often carried out in villages around Dasuya.

 

POLITICS

 

5.       A traditional Congress hub Dasuya which always voted Shri R C Dogra surprised everyone by voting S. Amarjit Singh Shahi (BJP) as MLA from Dasuya in recent elections.

 

DEMOGRAPHICS

 

6.       As on 2001 census, Dasuya had a population of 20,118 males. Males constitute 52 % and females 48 %. Average literacy rate is 76 %, higher than Nation average of 59.3 %, male literacy is 79 % and female literacy is 73 % in Dasuya.

 

7.       Dasuya is historic town dating back to Mahabharata. Pandava supposedly had lived here for some period. Ruins of old temples belonging to Pandavs are still in existence. National Highway 1A passes right through the middle of town.

 

8.       There are two colleges in Dasuya.

11.     Lack of Technical Institutes does not affect the output from Dasuya colleges & schools. Main colleges in Dasuya are JC DAV College, GTB Khalsa College for women. School are Govt. High School Kalowal, Guru Nanak Public School, SVJC DAV Public School, DAV Public School for Girls, Cambridge International School Dasuya, St. Paul School Dasuya, Govt. Senior secondary School Dasuya.
